1) What does the role of a production designer entail? And what skills do they need?
- "the hand of the director"
- Understand how the director reads the script and helps the director visually accomplish what he interprets the film to be. Helps achieve the directors vision of the script.
- Have to "mind read" the director
- Have tot create the visual world of the film
- In preproduction, their key role is  take the budget and purchase things to achieve the vision e.g. for the sets, props, rent buildings like castles and gardens etc...
- They either rent a location or build it from scratch
- The vision they have has to be within the budget
- Fast paced operation

-Set designers (when purchasing set props etc...)
- Set dressers
- Buyers and coordinators
- High on the priority list is having a good relationship with these people
- They have to have a good team around them
s

- Not having a close bond with the other production members (e.g. director)
- Having differing visions to the director
- Not having their vision within the budget
- The team may rely on the production designer. They have to have a skilled team around them
- The pace at which things move is extremely rapid and can become stressful
- Communication is key, and if fails
- The directors vision may chance along the way, and the script may change, so the production designer has to be able to adapt
